With the release of Path of Exile: Fall of Oriath on the horizon, players with access to the beta have began exploring this massive new expansion in preparation. Until now, Path of Exile’s campaign had four sections (“Acts”), but in Fall of Oriath, Grinding Gear Games have added six entirely new Acts. We’re diving in headfirst, and today, we’re going to be taking you on a virtual tour of Act Five.

Please note: this article contains extensive spoilers for Act Five in the Fall of Oriath expansion. If you want to experience the new content for yourself, stop reading now. Check out our articles about racing or macros in Path of Exile to avoid temptation.

The Beginning of Act Five

When you finish Act Four, a portal to the next act does not appear. Instead, a passageway to the bottom right of Highgate appears. When you go through it, you find yourself on a frozen cliff, technically still in Act Four.

Make your way through this wasteland by defeating the many new and powerful mobs that try to impede your progress. If you’ve got a weak stomach, be warned: the models for some of these mobs are downright grotesque. Almost all of them hit hard, so you’ll need to be slightly careful.

Once you make it to the end of the zone, activate the lever to power up the portal. After a moment, you’ll find yourself in the depths of a prison. Again.

Luckily, the prison in Act Five doesn’t last too long, and you’ll be able to make your way back to the town nearby.

You climb a ladder and arrive at Overseer’s Tower. You are met by a group of explorers, whose poor leadership and terrible sense of direction has apparently led them here.

These plucky bunch of adventurers direct you outside, and you’ll notice that you’re now in an area that’s incredibly reminiscent of Diablo III’s Act 3. You’re in a snow-covered expanse, walking along ledges and fighting off bad guys as you progress onwards. It’s not exactly unique, but the Diablo III vibes offer a nice little bit of nostalgia.

Head back inside, and you’ll find yourself in a ruined chapel. At least, I’m assuming it’s a ruined chapel based off of the massive mural on the floor.

As you venture further inside, your suspicions are confirmed–it is, indeed, a large church you’re standing in. (Called it.)

Take a moment to appreciate the stained glass windows, and tread carefully over the murals — these are priceless works of art, after all, and your shoes probably have blood on them after all the mobs you’ve brutally murdered.

Meet the Bosses of Act Five: Avarius and Kitava

You’ll soon discover that this beautifully decorated church isn’t empty, and a dark angel, Avarius, lies in wait. He lashes out at you, and Act Five’s boss fight begins.
After a short battle, Avarius reveals himself as an angel of light. Talk about awkward. You just beat up an angel inside of a church. Good luck explaining your way out of this one.
…Nevermind, Avarius still wants to kill you.
If you can defeat Avarius, backtrack and take a moment to explore some of the side areas, including the aptly-named Torched Courts.
You’ll need to collect a holy artifact if you want to kill the next boss, a hulking monstrosity named Kitava.
Once you’ve weakened them boss enough, you’ll be able to use the artifact to damage Kitava. It’s not over yet. Using the artifact on Kitava only enrages him, and the fight continues in a new form. Defeat him, and you’ll be able to use his screams as abilities of your own and, furthermore, getting rid of Kitava gives -30% to all of your elemental resistances permanently.
Once you go back and tell the settlement you have defeated Kitava, you are able to progress onwards. But what exactly lies ahead? If you enjoyed our visual walkthrough of Fall of Oriath’s Act Five, we’ll be tackling Act Six soon, so stay tuned!
