Whispers of the Old Gods lands on April 26, so it’s time to get cracking with deckbuilding! In this article, I’ll explore a tentacley alternative to the modern Control Priest deck.
Control Priest
Control Priest will be losing several powerful cards with the introduction of Standard. Deathlord, Lightbomb, and Sludge Belcher will all be leaving the format. Control Priest aims to control the board in the early and mid-game using strong, efficient minions and powerful board clears. Once you reach the late game in a stable position, this deck takes over and starts to come into its own. The key tool to facilitate the control style of this deck is the Priest Hero Power. Being able to heal your own minions is an extremely powerful tool for controlling the board and as such, using your Mana to heal an existing minion is usually a better play than putting out a new one. This extends your resources and enables you to keep more cards in hand for the later turns. Whispers brings with it several new minions that fit into this powerful archetype.
C’thuntrol Priest
Beckoner of Evil, Twilight Elder, Hooded Alcolyte, Crazed Worshipper, and Doomcaller all buff C’thun, and Doomcaller can even bring back the beast if he is hunted by the recently-nerfed Big Game Hunter.
Control Priest lost several large Taunt minions, but C’thun brought friends with large Health pools as well. Crazed Worshipper (3/6) buffs C’thun whenever it takes damage. Twin Emperor Vek’lor (4/6) summons a second Taunt minion when played if C’thun has 10 or more Attack.
Finally, Darkshire Alchemist provides a Chillwind Yeti body combined with a Flash Heal effect.
Other staples such as Entomb, Justicar Trueheart, Elise Starseeker, Auchenai Soulpriest, Wild Pyromancer, and Circle of Healing remain to create a Control shell that allows you to stay alive long enough to play C’thun.
Whispers of the Old Gods is an exciting expansion, and the first few weeks after release will be full of people trying to solve the new Standard format and playing with all the newest toys. This C’thun Priest deck is the first in a series that will be published over the next week to help you play all the newest cards while still performing at the top of your game.
